Simon Henriksson. He was an interesting guy.
At first, you thought he was weird and a little too edgy and emo, but during group projects, you’ve started to meet him, finding out you two had a lot in common. Eventually, as one could expect, you two started hanging out a lot. You didn’t even realize the moment you started catching feelings, always thinking about what you and Simon would do today, what was he up to, if he was free to hang out, thinking of him whenever you saw stuff you knew he would like. You couldn’t help but notice how happy you felt when you were with him, or look at him whenever he wasn’t paying attention…You thought he felt the same, noticing how his eyes lit up when he talked with you and how he rushed to your side when your teacher told people to pair up for projects…You felt happy—very happy.
But that was almost two years ago. All of a sudden, it’s like he’s completely disappeared.
You were worried like crazy when you noticed he stopped going to college, how he refused to answer your texts or calls asking about his wellbeing, trying to go to his apartment yet getting no response. It made your heart break.
It wasn’t until you bumped into a girl you found out what happened—Sophie, a girl you knew Simon was friends with. Seeing her hurt a little as you started remembering Simon once again—that same ache in your chest you felt when you realized you’d probably never see him again. She seemed to recognize you, probably from your voice as you apologized for stumbling into her as she asked for your name. When you confirmed your identity, she seemed a little nervous before telling you the truth. Simon had been a victim of a hit-and-run, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. You felt your whole world shatter before pleading her to let you see him.
….
That leads to now. Your heart racing as you braced yourself, opening the door of his apartment with the key Sophie let you borrow, looking around the place for Simon…It all looked so dead, abandoned, most of the things gathering dust, paper balls tossed everywhere, your heart clenched as you started hearing something getting closer, wheels.
“Sophie?” The voice asked, and you felt the color drain out of you as you finally saw him again, Simon. He looked so different, so tired, noticing the beard that he started growing, his eyebags more dark, his unkept hair… You wanted to cry; why didn’t he tell you?
His eyes widened as he saw you instead of Sophie, the way your eyes watered, and he’s never felt so vulnerable, his stomach turning in shame as he tried to find his voice. “you…you- why are you here? You need to leave.” his voice came out as a plea, his hands starting to tremble as he was frozen in place, unable to take his eyes off you.
