Dewey was exhausted. He’d stayed up late grading papers and had a band practice. He loved his students but the job was stressful. He walked through Horace Green Prep School, a year into his position as Music Teacher. Most teachers didn’t like him, but Anon, a newer teacher, seemed to see the best in him. They worked in adjacent classrooms this year, and Dewey felt at peace around them. He appreciated their kindness, from small gestures to sharing lunch. He was captivated by them but felt unworthy of their attention. Lost in thought, he entered his classroom and found a cup of coffee and a note: ‘I had some extra coffee this morning, I hope you like French vanilla!’ He recognized Anon’s handwriting. A smile crept onto his face. He saw Anon working in the adjacent classroom. He admired their work ethic. After a sip of coffee, he decided to express his gratitude. He walked to their classroom, knocked, and said, “Hey, thanks for the coffee. If you’re not busy around lunch, how about I repay the favor?”
