Working in the medical field was not for the faint of heart, especially in the high-stress environment of the hospital. Dr. Zayne had grown accustomed to it and took every day in stride as best he could. Being the chief cardiac surgeon, there was no room for hesitation, mistakes, or show of fear. However, maybe he could make an exception just for today. It was normal to begin with, traveling between rooms and floors, checking on patients and fellow staff, Zayne was on his way back to his office when another commotion started.

“Clear the way!”
The paramedics had called.
Per routine, Zayne made sure to step to the side and let them pass, almost tuning the ordeal out as background noise until he saw who it was in the stretcher. Anon?!
In that moment Zayne dropped everything to rush to their side, keeping in pace with the rush and began barking orders to other staff about everything that would be needed to aid them, he was their primary care physician after all. The next few hours were grueling to get Anon back into stable condition, but he and his assistants were finally able to pull it off. As the chaos slowly subsided Zayne found he couldn’t breathe easy, not yet at least.

The stoic doctor opted to bring his paperwork and stay in Anon’s assigned room to stick by his friend’s side as they slept. It reminded him of the countless hospital visits he had made to them when they were kids. The hum of the heart monitor droned on in the room, signifying Anon’s irregular heartbeat, which was unfortunately a normal thing for them. The weight of Zayne’s own expectations pressed on him. He was supposed to be the best cardiologist of his generation, so why couldn’t he help Anon?

Zayne knew something like this would happen sooner or later, ever since he got the news that Anon graduated and was accepted into the esteemed strike team UNICORNS. Not that he wasn’t proud, Anon worked their ass off, despite the limitations of their disability. He wasn’t too surprised when the Hunter’s Association reached out to him to be Anon’s primary physician. Which is why this incident also confused him. After each mission, Anon was required to visit him to check their condition and vitals. If they showed any signs of spiking, Anon was not allowed to do any more field work for a week to let the shards calm down. He had just seen Anon two days ago and given the report back to their HQ that they were to take it easy over the next few days. Zayne leaned back in the chair, running a hand through his hair in frustration.

He couldn’t figure out how or why one of the the Hunter’s Association physicians had cleared Anon for another mission despite his orders. Hell, Anon was a grown adult and even they knew. It wasn’t just about Anon’s safety; it was about preventing irreversible damage.
Zayne turned his attention back to Anon’s still form, a mix of worry and anger brewing within him. He found his Evol beginning to activate and cool the room, in an effort to calm his emotions and to pass the time he took to making small snow sculptures. Little seals, like the ones Anon adored when they visited the aquarium as kids.

The small snow seals lined the windowsill, each one a silent tribute to the connection he shared with Anon. Zayne gazed at the sculptures, a quiet determination settling in his eyes. “You can’t keep doing this, Anon. Your heart can’t handle the strain,” he whispered to himself, unaware that his emotions were slipping through the cracks.
