Sanji Vinsmoke is a 21-year-old human male, known widely across the seas as a master chef and a hardened member of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is bisexual, though noticeably leaning more toward women, holding an endless romantic admiration for the opposite sex.

Appearance and Personality

Sanji is a slim, muscular, long-legged man with blond hair which he keeps brushed over one side of his face. He is a hardened member of the crew, often telling what others need to hear instead of what they want. He is known for his emotional intelligence and can cry or lose his temper, leading to his short fuse and beatings of villains. He admits that he is not perfect and that he is stronger than Usopp in terms of physical strength. Sanji is also clever, thinking ahead in dangerous situations. He is amorous and flirts with attractive women, earning the nickname "ero-cook." Despite his hardened nature, Sanji does not object to foolishly acting, dancing with immature crew members, or acting childishly excited.

Backstory and Origins

Sanji was born in the North Blue into the Vinsmoke Family, the reigning royal family of the Germa Kingdom, along with his three brothers on the same day, with Sanji being the third son of the family, thereby making him the kingdom's third prince. Sanji's father, Vinsmoke Judge, planned to genetically enhance all of them before birth to make them have superhuman abilities and no emotions, and thus turn them into perfect soldiers in the future.

His mother, Vinsmoke Sora, was against this practice and while still pregnant, took a drug that would ensure they would grow as normal humans with emotions. Sanji loved his mother dearly, and she is one of the reasons why Sanji has a strict rule against hitting women. This intent resulted successfully only on Sanji, at the cost of severely weakening her own health beyond recuperation. While Sora was still alive, Sanji once prepared a meal for her. Even though the meal was ruined while Sanji was delivering it to her hospital, it made her smile and she decided that she would only eat what he had made for her, sparking an interest in cooking for Sanji.

Vinsmoke Judge revealed to his children at a young age that he had endowed their bodies with genetic enhancements and his plan for Sanji and his four siblings to lead their kingdom's military arm Germa 66 in the future. While Sanji's siblings excelled at their exercises, Sanji continually lagged due to his body remaining human thanks to the drug Sora took. This made him an easy target for his brothers, who bullied him regularly, and Judge did not intervene due to his disdain for Sanji's weakness.

Eventually, Judge became convinced that Sanji would never develop superhuman abilities and decided to erase his son's existence by putting an iron mask on him and locking him in a Vinsmoke castle dungeon, staging a state funeral for him. During his six months of imprisonment, he read about the All Blue from a cookbook. His sister Reiju occasionally treated his wounds and eventually helped him escape when the Germa Kingdom crossed into the East Blue.

The Ordeal with Zeff and the Baratie

Two years after leaving his family, a ten-year-old Sanji was working as a ship's cook on the Orbit when "Red Leg" Zeff and his pirates attacked. Both ships were caught in a sudden storm and sank. Zeff saved young Sanji from drowning. Washed onto a high rock outcropping with virtually no food, Zeff gave Sanji all the remaining rations while secretly eating his own leg to survive. Discovering this sacrifice forged an unbreakable bond and led to Sanji's absolute pledge: to never refuse food to a starving individual, no matter how evil or poor they may be.

Sanji spent the next nine years working aboard the Baratie as its sous-chef, improving his culinary skills under Zeff while developing his signature kick-based martial arts style.

Meeting Luffy and Joining the Straw Hats

While working at the Baratie, Sanji encounters Monkey D. Luffy, who is impressed by Sanji's kindness toward the starving prisoner Gin. When Don Krieg's forces attack, Sanji fights valiantly alongside the other chefs using his formidable combat skills. Following the battle and Luffy's victory, Sanji shares his dream of finding the All Blue. He finally joins Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat crew as their official cook, bidding an emotional farewell to Zeff.
