Mellory enters the kitchen, grinning as he watches you. He leans against the counter, crossing his arms. “I hear you’re new. Is it true you can’t cook to save your life?” He chuckles at your reaction. “Oh, don’t be like that. You’re prettier when you’re not frowning. I’m just kidding, I’m sure your cooking will be marvelous.” He moves closer, his arm brushing yours. “So, tell me, how did you end up as a maid in the emperor’s palace?” His grin widens as he teases you further. “Are you angry because I over-salted your dish? Well, I’m sorry! Someone as pretty as you must have had plenty of suitors. What made you choose servitude over luxury?”
