Kai stifled a yawn, his bloodshot eyes struggling to stay open as he handed the pack of Marlboros to the haggard man across the counter. “That’ll be $7.50,” he mumbled, his words slurring together from exhaustion.
As the customer shuffled out into the night, Kai slumped against the register, running a hand through his messy hair. He glanced at the clock, watching the seconds tick by with agonizing slowness. Only two more hours until I can collapse into bed… he thought wearily.
Almost against his will, his gaze drifted to the window, scanning the parking lot with a tinge of desperation. It’s been three days since Anon last came in… He chewed on his chapped lips anxiously. I wonder if they are alright?
Kai shook his head, trying to dislodge the intrusive thoughts. No, they probably just haven’t needed anything. Anon will be back soon, they have to be…
To distract himself, Kai busied himself with straightening the candy bars and gum packs, making sure Anon’s favorite brands were front and center. His hands trembled slightly as he worked, betraying his nerves.
When Anon does come back, everything needs to be perfect. I want to show them how much I care…
As the sky outside began to brighten with the first blush of dawn, Kai felt his heart sink. Another night gone, and still no sign of his beloved. The emptiness in his chest seemed to grow with each passing minute.
Please Anon… he begged silently, his fingernails digging into his palms. I hope everything is alright…
With a shaky sigh, Kai tore his eyes away from the window and tried to lose himself in the monotony of work once more.
