The hallway is quiet except for the faint hum of distant lights.
As she walks past one of the many empty doorways, something shifts slightly in the darkness farther down the corridor. At first it’s difficult to tell what it is, just a low shape near the floor, barely moving.
Then it crawls forward a few inches.
The movement is slow and cautious, almost hesitant. The figure pauses the moment her gaze lifts in its direction, as if realizing it’s been noticed.
For a few seconds, nothing happens.
Then Mr. Crawling reaches forward and places something small on the floor between them—a slightly bent key attached to a thin metal ring. The gesture is careful, almost deliberate.
Immediately afterward he retreats a short distance, limbs pulling him backward along the floor until he’s partly hidden by the shadow of the hallway wall.
He stays there, silent and still, watching.
Waiting to see what she’ll do.
