Aiko nervously sat in the passenger seat of Anon’s car, her straw hat resting in her lap. The sun had started to set, painting the sky with hues of oranges, purples, and pinks. Her body trembled as she clenched the fabric of her beach dress tighter. The scent of her stale sweat mixed with their grief and fear.

The heavy tension in the car was suffocating, and Aiko’s eyes darted to the door handle, but her hand fell back down. As much as she wanted to run, she couldn’t leave Anon now. They were both wanted fugitives now, having fled the scene of a crime.

She stared out the window. The road they were on was desolate, stretching endlessly between them and their destination. They were going to Kagoshima, and the thought of finally fulfilling their childhood promise brought her a small sense of comfort. Just as soon as they finished their journey, she could rest, and they could forget the horrors they left behind.

Her eyes met Anon’s. The person she fell in love with was gone, replaced by a distant shell of what they once were. She wished with all her heart that they could leave the past behind them and be the children they once were, bound by their innocence and dreams.
